Peggy and Steve Kittelson
Peggy and Steve have been creating fine handcrafted kaleidoscopes since 1987 when they combined their stained glass studios. Their goal was to create unique scopes that are not only beautiful to look at but very pleasing to touch and hold. They have achieved this goal by incorporating many facets of their glass craftsmanship, creating kaleidoscopes that are distinctive and original. Their work can be found in major collections all over the world and in demand by discerning collectors. They are known for their classic 2-mirror kaleidoscope imagery and the highest quality optical illusions are defined by the incredible display of miniature glass sculptures found in the object chambers.
The exteriors of their scopes are fused and slumped glass combined with finely machined metal turning ends which house the object chambers.
Each kaleidoscope is a collaboration utilizing the talents of both individuals. Steve has elevated his fusing skills to that of master resulting in clean, crisp definition of design, often requiring multiple firing and annealing. Peggy’s flame-sculpted pieces found in the object chambers are among the most beautiful to be viewed through a kaleidoscope.
They play ideas off of each other until an image is formed – the exterior usually comes first, then they decide how to best carry the design through the interior.
A sketch is made and defined until they are satisfied, their decisions being influenced by whether they can technically achieve the desired look in a way that will be pleasing in the interior as well as the exterior.
The excitement of looking at each new scope as it is completed is the most intriguing aspect for Steve. It is then, when it is finished, that the mystery and beauty are revealed and each viewer seems something different in the image. Peggy looks for the harmony created as the colors and textures merge to compose a form of music for the eyes. They enjoy knowing that the viewer participates in the randomness of the art and that their work brings child-like wonder to people of all ages. Kaleidoscopes are creatively inspirational for them as well, as the two are ever challenged to find new ways of improving their skills and solving new problems.
