Made in the Shade / Steve Failows

In 1977, I began my custom stained glass career on Long Island, New York, after leaving the U.S. Post Office. At that point, I realized I had it “Made in the Shade,” hence the name of my business. Through the years, I have owned and operated a number of storefront studios as well as taught my craft to countless students. Eventually, I focused on making kaleidoscopes in 1993 when I moved to Arizona.

I consider myself a lucky man making a living from what I love to do. My kaleidoscopes are truly a magical art form, thought-provoking and inspiring, so different from moment to moment, your own private viewing experience.

Kaleidoscopes are mirrored tubes of magic, irresistible to children and adults alike. I enjoy making a wide selection if kaleidoscopes from my smallest 3” to my largest 25” color model in a variety of mediums – stained glass, wood, brass and ceramic. Random and unpredictable, yet perfectly ordered, the geometry of the mind melts the vision of the heart in a joyful visual symphony. Enjoy!
